HTC Butterfly has been launched in India without much fanfare. The handset comes with top specifications and great features and is certainly going to give tough fight to the entrenched market leaders like Samsung Galaxy S III and Apple’s iPhone 5. Though taking out a single winner out of the three handsets is very difficult, nonetheless given the fact that HTC Butterfly comes with best specs, features and build quality tilts the balance in its favour compared to the two other handsets that have ruled the smart-phone market during much of the year 2012 and this year thus far. Both the handsets have been sold in millions and millions with latest estimates suggesting Korean based tech giant to have sold more than fifty million handsets. Apple’s iPhone 5 must not have been sold in lesser numbers as there are millions and millions fans of this handset across the world.



In the meantime next generation flagship handsets of both Galaxy S3 and HTC have been introduced and both are set to hit the market next month. Nonetheless demand for HTC Butterfly is not going to come down in any foreseeable future. HTC is working overtime to match with the market leaders including Cupertino based Apple and Korean tech giant Samsung. Both Apple and Sammy rule the smart-phone market right now. But with the recent launch, the old rumors that HTC was giving up hope of a turnaround with its Android smart-phone have started looking like toothless. Though it has an extensive plan about launching Microsoft Windows Phone 8 handsets, it is also focusing on Android handsets.
HTC Butterfyl will give tough fight to other market leaders too. Butterfly, which debuted in the Japanese market as ‘J Butterfly’, has now released in many parts of the world by now, including India. The phone is HTC’s most expensive offering in the market which also certifies it as the most expensive Android device available here, as well. Butterfly is priced at Rs. 45,990 which makes it even more expensive than Samsung’s most premium offerings Galaxy S III and Note II, and that too by a margin of around Rs. 10,000. The Butterfly also exceeds, in terms of pricing, the lowest model of Apple iPhone available in the market. Then what justifies the price-point of this new Android device. Here, we take a look.
As far as its specifications are concerned, the handset features a 5 inch screen which can be classified as a phablet device from HTC. But the Taiwanese company avoids using any such terminology to refer to its devices, and goes with ‘smartphones’ only. The phone doesn’t cuts corners and has lavish treatment meted out to its design and aesthetics. The phone does away with cheap plastic back-case and uses soft polycarbonate instead, which makes it easier to handle and operate. The camera fits in perfectly in the back with a slightly raised stance. The phone is waterproof as well, which makes it a more adventurous choice.
The handset runs on Android Jelly Bean. Butterfly, which runs on Android 4.1.1, also boasts of a full HD display which makes it the only one to offer such quality display in phones. The phone gives an excellent 441 ppi quality which makes the pictures and texts incredibly sharp on the phone. The phone feels lightweight for a large phone and has a smooth Gorilla Glass 2 protective screen on top which offers feather touch feel to the device. The phone offers 8 megapixel snapper at the back with LED flash and autofocus, and a 2.1 megapixel camera in the front. The front camera can be used for 1080p video calling as well. There’s also a notification light, both on the front and at the back, which blinks when the phone is kept on charging. Whatever be the orientation of the phone, the light will be able to inform a user of its charging status, which turns green from red when fully charged. Under the hood, HTC Butterfly is powered by a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC quad-core processor with 2 GB of RAM. The in-built memory is of 16 GB which can be expanded up to 32 GB with the help of a microSD card. The camera of the phone also has some advanced technical specifications, such as having a HTC ImageChip, which is the company’s own Image Signal processor. The phone has some excellent optics which makes it a good performer even in low light conditions.
The handset comes with a rather very dependable battery. Butterfly is powered by a 2010 mAh battery which can easily be able to last a full day, with the average daily usage involving calls, emails, social-networking etc. The phone overall does good for the features it packs but the price point remains a huge concern. It will be interesting to see how HTC manages to convince a prospective phone customer to put in their money on this new device over other, somewhat better and most importantly cheaper devices. So things are looking very optimistic.
